The most obvious answer would be: Life is what you want it to be. If we go any further into the debate, we will step into a mire of belief systems and their infinite individualized interpretations.
I'll share my interpretation but it's not any more valid nor invalid than the next blokes. Somehow for some unknown reason that no one can explain, life "magically" appeared. It can't be explained completely by any one person and there's always unanswered questions.
The next question is now that there is life, what is each individual supposed to accomplish?
Although it's completely up to the individual to choose what's their life purpose, if anything, I sway toward the Yogic approach; it's possible to achieve peace of mind through the repeated practice of complete cessation of thought through concentration.
There are many methods to calm the thoughts and it is a very difficult task. Once the mind has completely ceased all thoughts, the individual ceases to be until the individual consciousness returns. The ceasing to be or dissolving into higher consciousness is typically known to be experienced as ecstasy, the greatest happiness, bliss and so forth. By repeated practice of the methods it is possible to vanquish the individual ego for good. What is the individual ego? That's the part of us that makes us an individual; one that experiences every emotion; experiences pain and pleasure, and every polar opposite. For those who wish an "earlier" release from the entrapment between all of the opposites, Yoga is practiced.
Life is what you want it to be.
